My sweet treat lovers, have I got a recipe for you! These chocolate chip oatmeal cookies are one for the boxes, the recipe box that is.

This recipe came from my great grandmother, who’s handwritten recipe is pictured below. My grandma, who’s not much for baking {but loves eating sweets}, received this recipe from her mother. It’s one that the whole family knows and loves.

Great grandma's hand written recipe for her famous chocolate chip oatmeal cookies

This past weekend my mom and I visited my grandma to help her celebrate her birthday. And because my grandma has a {major} sweet tooth {Hi Grandma!}, I thought it would be great to make her some cookies that she knows and loves from the past.

While we were there I asked her the story of how these cookies came to be. She said she honestly wasn’t sure if my great grandma had concocted this recipe herself, or if it was possibly a Toll House cookie recipe that came off the back of a package of chocolate chips. Either way, it was one the whole family loved and would wait patiently for.

My grandma tells a story about how my great grandma would ask her to come into the kitchen to help bake these cookies. Apparently great grandma had a stand mixer {the KitchenAid version was created in 1919} and would use it to make these cookies {a woman after my own heart!}. However, my grandma was always one to want to rearrange furniture and clean up the house, so the cookie baking didn’t last very long.

One more final family story before we move on to this crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside cookie. The plates that are holding these perfectly stacked cookies came from my great grandma as well. My grandma had passed them along to me during my bridal shower with a story:

My great grandma had the dinner table all ready for when my great grandpa came home from work. My grandma’s two brothers had jumped up towards the table to see what their dad had brought home for them when they pulled the tablecloth down and everything with it. All of great grandma’s dishes went crashing to the floor and great grandpa picked them up with a shovel.

Years later {because this happened during the depression} my great grandpa went and picked out a whole new set of dishes to surprise his wife. The dishes below were her surprise. I was honored to have received them and to be able to use them to photograph the chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe on them. Everything comes full circle in the end, right?

Beautiful plates from my great grandmother that had been passed down from my grandma.

As far as chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipes go, this one is pretty basic, but sometimes basic also means the most delicious. It doesn’t need to be doctored up with fancy brown butter or expensive specialty chocolate chips. No, this recipe requires ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry and refrigerator. I promise you, they will be a cookie you’ll want to make for years to come, just like my great grandma did.

Great grandma’s recipe says to bake them at 350ºF for 8-10 minutes, but I’ve found that baking them for 11-13 minutes yields the best, nicely browned cookie. They bake up pretty thin, but that’s also nice because you feel like you can indulge in more than one.

Fresh from the oven, these chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside oatmeal chocolate chip cookies will be a recipe you'll pass down for generations.

These oatmeal chocolate chip cookies really are the best of both worlds. Chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside. They don’t take much time to put together or bake. And in the end you’re left with one delicious cookie that you won’t be able to get enough of!

I hope you all enjoy these cookies as much as my entire family does, and if you end up making them, make sure to #ionlycameforthecake on Insta! My grandma is on Instagram now and I’m sure she would love to see your photos!
